There are no absolute counter indications for HRV biofeedback. It is a low-risk technique and generally considered very safe for most people including those with chronic health conditions. However, if you have any of the conditions listed below, please consult your healthcare provider before considering HRV biofeedback, as slow-paced breathing may not be recommended for you:

  • Severe breathing difficulties
  • Severe, unstable cardiovascular disease including advanced heart failure
  • Severe epilepsy and seizure disorder
  • Progressive neurological conditions including dementia, Parkinson’s disease
  • Severe peripheral neuropathy
  • Recent stroke or traumatic brain injury
  • Severe PTSD
  • Psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia and psychosis
  • Severe substance misuse
  • Kidney disease
  • If you have a pacemaker or any other implanted cardiac device
