Research-based Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biofeedback coaching for people with lived experience of cancer

The impact of cancer

The impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment can leave your nervous system, which is our body’s command centre, stuck in a constant state of “fight-or-flight” or survival mode leaving you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. HRV Biofeedback is a simple, non-invasive research-backed tool that is proven to balance and shift your nervous system away from being stuck in survival mode.

Who is our coaching for?

It is designed for those navigating life after primary cancer treatment and the unique challenges of the “what now?” phase. This coaching is for those managing long-term side effects; you can be receiving adjuvant therapy or living with secondary cancer. The purpose of our coaching is to provide you with non-invasive tools to help you manage your wellbeing and regain a sense of agency and control. More on eligibility

What is HRV biofeedback and how can it help?

HRV Biofeedback involves practising paced breathing with feedback of your own heart rhythm with the aim of training your nervous system to stay balanced. It teaches you to shift your body out of survival mode and back into “rest-and-digest” or “thrive” mode. By mastering your breath, you can actively lower your stress levels, regain your energy, and reclaim your sense of calm and control.

How does it work?

By syncing your breath with your heart in a way that balances your nervous system. Biofeedback acts as a ‘high-tech mirror’, using a small sensor to display your heart’s activity in real-time. Watching the screen, you adjust your breathing to sync it with your heart and see instantly that it’s working.

The feedback teaches you to regulate your nervous system. Over time, it improves how your body regulates blood pressure, strengthening your stress ‘Brake Pedal’. This builds stress resilience, supports anxiety and sleep, and helps you reclaim a sense of calm in your body. Learn more.

What do those who tried it say?

Here is some feedback from those who completed four weeks of HRV biofeedback training:

it’s such a shock! How does your body know, or your brain kind of learn to override the anxiety response like that? Amazing!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this like meditation? I’m not very good at clearing my mind.

Not exactly. While it feels calming, this is “physiological training.” We use the breath to influence the heart, which then sends safety signals to the brain. You don’t need to clear your mind; you just need to follow the visual pacer on the screen which guides your breathing, guiding you when to inhale and when to exhale to keep your HRV graph smooth and wave-like. It is a “bottom-up” approach to calm rather than a “top-down” one.

I’m still on medication (e.g., Tamoxifen/Letrozole). Can I still do HRV biofeedback coaching?

Absolutely. In fact, many clients use HRV biofeedback training specifically to help manage the side effects of hormonal therapies, such as hot flushes and sleep disruption. It is a non-invasive, drug-free complement to your ongoing medical care.

Why can’t I just use my Apple Watch or Fitbit?

While those devices are great for general activity monitoring, they often “smooth” data or take readings only while you are still. For biofeedback training, we need “live” millisecond-accuracy of the intervals between heartbeats. The sensors we recommend provide high-grade data that allows us to see your nervous system’s response in real-time.

What if I miss a few days of practice?

That is exactly why we have the 4-week monitoring period. Recovery and progress aren’t linear. If you miss days, we look at the barriers, whether it’s fatigue, time-management, unexpected events etc. and use solution-focused coaching to find a way back that feels manageable, not like a chore.

What happens after I complete the coaching programme? Do I stop the HRV biofeedback?

Your recovery and nervous system adaptation don’t stop after five weeks. Like any new skill, lasting change benefits from continued practice. You’ll receive a follow‑on practice plan, but we also know the early weeks and months are often when ‘life gets in the way’ and habits can slip. If you’d like extra support to review or maintain your progress, we offer optional follow‑up coaching, including remote reviews and quarterly online drop‑in clinics.

Is my data safe?

Yes. We use a GDPR-compliant Google Workspace with an extra layer of encryption. Your personal data and HRV readings are private between us and are never shared with third parties.
